Die Bauernkate Klauseck/en

  The farmer’s cottage Klauseck ("Kate Klauseck").
  In 1916, Otto and Anita Eckart bought a farmer’s cottage in Raisdorf, near Kiel, Germany. They called it "Klauseck", after their son Klaus who was born that same year.

•

  Generally, the German word “Kate” (cottage) denotes a small house or farmstead (similar to the Scottish croft) at a distance from the village and with smaller agricultural landholding than a farm.

• 

  Supply of fresh food.
  Vegetables were grown in the cottage garden. Furthermore, chickens, a cow and several pigs provided the family with dairy produce, eggs and meat during the war years.

  The cow and horse barn was located on the left, behind the big wooden flaps. At the end of the hall was a large open fireplace with a crackling log fire.

  Whenever Otto and Anita were away, an old lady took care of the small estate.

  After the war, Otto leased the cottage to a soldier of his sea battalion and sold it in 1927.
